Day 335 – Yermits vs Robots vs Apples: The Berlin Wall

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS VS APPLES: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week ten! The Theme: The Berlin Wall.

This week is EXTRA AWESOME because this week, we have a guest contestant!

Do you know of the Sarah Apple? One time we were stuck on a plane that was going to crash into a mountain and she sewed all the seat covers into a giant parachute, slung me over her shoulder, and jumped out of the plane to safety. On the gentle descent down, she knit me a pair of socks while singing me a german lullaby.

TRUE STORY.

Anyway. This week’s theme is HARD. HARD LIKE A CONCRETE WALL.

Look, I was like, 8 years old when the Berlin Wall came down. You know what I remember about that time? “Oh, a wall. HOLY CRAP A MY LITTLE PONY COMMERCIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!one!!!!!!!!”

So I had to do a little research. You know what’s hard to find the funny in? Yep, the Berlin Wall. Not a lot of funny there. But one thing that really stuck out at my was the number of banana jokes that purportedly originated in East Berlin. Luxury goods and exotic foods were hard to come by, so bananas seem to stand in for a lot of the food disparities between East and West.

So of course my Berlin Bot has a banana!

Here is Jenny Yermit’s genius entry:

A TOURIST. This is the smartest solution to the theme, I wish I’d thought of it!

And here is where Sarah Apple’s entry will be!

check out her entry to see his wild side. Love this guy- so adorable!

DAY 333 – Yermits vs Robots; Space, the final frontier

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week eight! The Theme: NASA SPACE CHALLENGE.

We were inspired by the Etsy/NASA Space Contest (which sadly isn’t open to Canadians. Booo, waaah, grouse, etc).

It’s probably not typical, but when I think of the history of space exploration, I think of the animals that were actually the first astronauts. And since this was specifically NASA-themed, I couldn’t do my favourite, Laika. So I thought I would do the first monkey, Albert. Like many of the animals that paved the way for human spaceflight, Albert died in flight. So when I think of the awesomeness of space, and the amazing advances NASA makes in science, I also think about the animals that were the first Earth eyes to see outside of out atmosphere.

And then I think about how terrified the animals must have been, and I feel bad. Animals are pretty much always taking one for the team when it comes to humans. We are going to be SO SCREWED when they evolve opposable thumbs and giant brains.

And, because this is Robot a Day and we thrive on factual accuracies in our robots* here is Albert in his space helmet:

*bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Here is Jenny Yermit’s totally win-tastic entry:

Wow. Just…. wow. Seriously, wow. Amazing. Jenny really captured all the details here, the orange suit, the pose with helmet… the flag in the background. So perfect.

NEXT WEEK’S THEME: TBA

DAY 332 – Yermits vs Robots; Robot as a Yermit / Yermit as a Robot

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week seven (really? seven?). The Theme: ROBOT AS YERMIT / YERMIT AS ROBOT.

I present: A ROBOT AS A YERMIT! I wish I’d thought of this 300 bots ago- it would have made this project WAY EASIER:

Okay, I’m just joking. Here’s the real one:

It’s a drunken bear! Though it does kinda look like Teen Wolf Gets a Job at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

Here is Jenny Yermit’s robotically awesome entry:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! amazing. How does Jenny do this every week?

NEXT WEEK’S THEME: NASA! SPACE SHUTTLE! YEAH!

Day 331 – Yermits vs Robots: POTATOES (yes, really)

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week five six. The Theme: POTATOES.

Look, I can anthropomorphize ANYTHING:

Is it wrong that I suddenly want fries? Mmmmmm.

Here is Jenny Yermit’s delicious entry:

His brain is made of mashed potato!

Are you loving these challenges? I am! Jenny’s work totally makes my Monday- I adore her use of colour and shape… they look like drawings come to life! Perfect.

NEXT WEEK’S THEME: Yermit as Robot; Robot as Yermit!

Day 329 – Robots vs Yermits: BATTLE READY

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week four. The Theme: BATTLE READY.

I was a little worried when creating this that I might have gone too far. This robot is, after all, wearing the skin of its Yermit enemy into battle.* That’s… well, really taking this battle thing a bit far, yes? Robots. Their primary progamming is to be a jerk.

And, okay, I know. Ewoks as back-up? Ewoks are tiny. Tiny, and adorable. They are little, chirpy teddy bears. Probably, in imperial space, their pelts would be prized as moustache toupees for those with bald upper lips.

But damn! They can kick some stormtrooper butt. Using nothing but logs and vines. And okay. Stormtroopers are a special kind of stupid, let’s face it. But still. Ewoks. The are at the perfect level to hamstring their foes. Um. assuming that their foes are approximately stormtrooper height, of course.

And they’ve got the robot’s back. That’s gotta count for something.

*no Yermits were harmed in the making of this challenge.

Here is Jenny Yermit’sfantastic entry:

It is wearing robot guts. HILARIOUS. I love that we both went for the same concept. Also, clearly, we’re both deeply disturbed.

NEXT WEEK’S THEME: oh wait we haven’t decided yet. TO BE ANNOUNCED!

Day 328 – Yermits vs. Robots: Survivor!

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week three. The Theme: SURVIVOR.

Now, I haven’t watched survivor since the very first season, so this is all I remember… tiny bathing suits and rat-eating. I’m assuming not much has changed.

Here is Jenny Yermit’s hilarious entry:

Look at those details! The blood and injuries, the grizzled hair, the beard… and she even set the scene with that log and the grass. Setting the bar pretty high there, Jenny!

NEXT WEEK’S THEME: “BATTLE READY”

Day 327 – Yermits vs Robots; Favouritest Doctor

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week two. The Theme: YOUR FAVOURITE DOCTOR.

I really only have one thing to say: FEZZES ARE COOL.

Also, bowties:

Here is Jenny Yermit’s AMAZINGLY AWESOME entry:

I LOVE IT. CHECK OUT THAT FREEZE RAY!

It also falls to me to provide this week’s prize: one lucky commenter (on either blog, it doesn’t matter) will win a robot fingerpuppet wearing a fez! hurrah!

Day 326 – Yermits vs Robots; Werewolf vs Vampire!

Last week, I met someone who is totally awesome: Jenny, of YERMITS. Since we are basically in the same field (making things dressed as other things), and since trying to explain our work to others leads to confusion (“wait, are they real robots? You…. dress them up?”), we figured it was

TIME.

TO.

WAGE.

CRAFTY.

BATTLE.

I introduce you to:

YERMITS VS. ROBOTS: BATTLE OF INCOMPREHENSIBILY CUTE THINGS, OR MAYBE THINGS DRESSED AS OTHER THINGS WE DIDN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT TO CALL IT.

This is week one. The Theme:
SPARKLY VAMPIRES AND SHIRTLESS WEREWOLVES.

Or, as I prefer to refer to the Edward/Jacob phenomenon: Team Necrophilia and Team Beastiality.* Look, I can’t help it. I just prefer that my vampires don’t sparkle. I mean really. ANGEL didn’t have to sparkle. SPIKE sure didn’t sparkle. And Oz was a cute little werewolf with bad fashion sense. Thank goodness he didn’t take his shirt off, I would have died from laughing.

*it’s funny because it is uncomfortably true

Edited to add:

JENNY HAS POSTED HERS TOO! HOORAY! Check out the awesomeness at her blog. Here’s a peek:

Excellent! Please do check out her blog to see more photos.

Also, Jenny has contributed a sweet prize to this week’s YVR; a set of four buttons to one random commenter!

Day 317 – Puppet Bot

Look at it. Just…. look at it. I’m tempted to carry it around and let it talk for me for awhile. Time to brush up on my (non-existent) ventriloquism skills!

I should probably post a video of it in action!

Day 316 – Amelia Earhart Bot

I was all set to say that I’m a little afraid to mail this bot out because it might go missing in transit, but then I read the Amelia Earhart Wikipedia entry. And then I realized that she was actually totally kick-ass and amazing, and that a joke about her disappearance is actually kinda lame. And unfortunate. And probably not very funny.

Poop jokes are still fine though, right?
